Raag Darbari is the first satirical novel of its kind in Hindi spanning post-Independence rural Awadh. It is authored by Shrilal Shukla and it needs to be read to really enjoy wit and sarcasm flowing through it, author got the Sahitya Academy Award, the highest Indian literary award, in 1970 for this novel. This was made in TV serial as well.
Novel is commentary on deteriorating values in the cities and villages of post-Independence Indian society. It exposes the helplessness of intellectuals in the face of a strong and corrupt nexus between criminals, businessmen, police and politicians. Though a lot has changed since the book was first written, but almost everything can be seen even today.
I found it interesting just by amount of humour and language skills which brings forth that humour, it’s a class apart in its genre and brought me back to Hindi reading after a long-2 time, I recommend it fully, I assure it would not disappoint and you would like to finish it in one go.
